red barberries

an awful Christmas carol
stuck in my head

Not bad for an image-prompted haiku, if I do say so myself. I shot this on a shopping trip to town yesterday, and reversed it to make room for the speech balloon. Japanese barberry (megi), though beautiful in the winter and used by birds as food and shelter, is highly invasive in the eastern US and Canada, displacing native shrubs whilst changing soil chemistry and condition to make it more hospitable to Lyme-carrying ticks.
