traveling together

the Norfolk-Southern logo and a graffiti tag

railroad

a line of balloons

beside the campus elms bobbing drunkenly

trees

wood frog egg-mass

anchored to a projecting twig a gleaming ring

reflections, seasonal pools

slow Saturday

the quarry trucks sit spotless beside the aggregate

quarry

between the blue stones

the snowplow pushed off the road yellow coltsfoot wheels

wildflowers

a phoebe catches flies

above the old Black Hawk hayrake on the barn bank

rust

hydrophobia

the nocturnal fox aims its muzzle at the sun

fox

after months of snow

the rust on the drainage grate is in full spring bloom

reflections, rust

the snow gone

white versus green figure & ground switch on the striped maple

trees

mourning cloak

won’t your tongue get stuck to that icy snow?

butterflies, insects, snow

groped for each other

& stopped just short of grappling wild grape tendrils

grapevine, snow

dead tendril

still clinging tight to a quarter inch of nothing

grapevine, snow
