Yellow-shafteds are a subspecies of northern flicker, but were thought to be a separate species when I was growing up. The birds haven’t changed, and the war between taxonomic lumpers and splitters never really ends. Anyway, I heard the call that gives them the “flicker” name and it prompted a little shock of recognition, albeit a rather literal one.
