I know as much about geology as I do about birds—very little—but that doesn’t stop me from being an enthusiast. Compared to the folded Appalachians where I live, the geology of Washington D.C. is fascinating and complex, with inclusions from a former subduction zone dating back before the Appalachian orogeny to when a chain of volcanic islands from the ancestral, pre-Pangea Atlantic were gobbled up… to say nothing of the later collision with Africa.
